Well, what if something disrupts this “vital link”? Do you think you’d have some problems? Maybe some pain? Maybe a headache? Maybe tingling and/or numbness?
Consider this - The “guardians” of your spinal cord are THE VERTEBRAE!
Your vertebrae protect your spine from damage or harm and also allow you to twist, turn, bend, and move around without much restriction.
But, sometimes these “guardians” get knocked out of place. For example: The birthing process…falling while learning how to walk…poor posture…lifting…twisting, playing contact sports, driving for long periods of time, etc.
Let’s talk specifics.
Your spinal column has 24 vertebrae (guardians). Twenty-four moving bones that make up your spinal column, and protect your spinal cord.
Like any other set of joints in your body, if these vertebrae aren’t perfectly aligned, they don’t function properly. You can have pain, decreased range of motion, muscle imbalance, scoliosis, headaches, organ or gland dysfunction, and more (we’ll talk about more specifics later).
Many everyday activities, like standing up all day long, can cause these bones to get out of their “normal” position. Think about how your child sleeps, or sits at his desk in school, or watches television. (You get the picture.)
Do you know what happens when these bones get even a little “stuck” out of place?
They press on and interfere with the vital link – your spinal cord – and this causes your nervous system to “dysfunction”. What that really means is, ultimately, these misalignments interfere with the way your body functions.

SECRET #2:
The first step to eliminating your pain is a
Thorough examination by someone who really knows what to look for!
The first thing we do is find out ALL ABOUT YOU. What we call a complete “case history.” This is the first step. I want to know things like what falls you suffered as a child, what sports you may have played, what you do for a living, and so on. This “vital information” will usually give me the secret clues and answers to some of your health problems.
The next thing is, of course, an orthopedic examination. But this is unlike any “traditional” examination. This is a very specific Chiropractic examination.
First of all, there isn’t a lot of cold, painful, “probing”. I look carefully at your posture (I do a scoliosis check)…I check your and muscle strength…and other totally painless neurological tests.
What am I looking for? You guessed it:

SECRET #4:

Here is some information you may not have known about Sports and Chiropractic:
A study in the March/April 2002 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics finds that more and more professional sports teams are utilizing chiropractic care for their team members.
This survey study targeted the head athletic trainers of the 36 National Football League (NFL) teams. The trainers each had at least 17 years of experience and at least one year of experience as a head trainer.
Questionnaires the trainers answered revealed that:
• 45% of the trainers themselves had been to a chiropractor.
• 71% of the trainers had worked professionally with a chiropractor.
• 77% of the trainers have referred players to a chiropractor.
• 31% of NFL teams use an official team chiropractor.
• 100% of the trainers revealed that some players use a chiropractor without being referred by the team doctor.
• 81% of the trainers agree that there is a role for chiropractors in the NFL.
• While 31% of the teams have a chiropractor officially on staff, an additional 12% of teams that do not have chiropractors on staff refer players to chiropractors.
So, let’s get back to our discussion.

Well, if you’ll spend just about the same (or even less) than the price of an oil change to come in, and get your spine adjusted , your BODY will be given a chance to function as close to 100% as possible – without pain. The effects are too numerous to mention.
Just be CONSISTENT.
If, however, you try to short-cut, or look for the “quick-fix”, the same vicious cycle will kick in over and over and over again. How many times have you ignored your pain and symptoms? Harvard University Researchers: Deficiency Of This Nutrient Is Responsible For 72,000-96,000 Preventable Deaths Per Year

If a simple and inexpensive way to make you live longer existed, would you use it?
What’s that? Easy question, you say? Well, let’s tackle an even easier one first and see if your answer is still the same. Here’s the easier question: What if there was a way for you to eliminate the #1 cause of preventable death in the United States and save money at the same time? Would you do that? Of course you would… who wouldn’t? Evidently, a whole heck of a lot of people would NOT!
Here’s the scoop: Harvard researchers just published the results of a study, “The
Preventable Causes of Death in the United States: Comparative Risk Assessment of Dietary, Lifestyle, and Metabolic Risk Factors.” They listed the top causes of preventable death and how many people they estimate die each year from each risk factor.
The number one is tobacco smoking, killing 436,000-500,000 each year. Simply not smoking would eliminate the leading cause of preventable death from your life – AND save you quite a bit of money. Yet millions still smoke.
The study also found an Omega-3 deficiency causes between 72,000-96,000 deaths every year. This is very similar to the deaths caused by high trans fat intake (between 63,000-97,000). One researcher mentioned it is hard to nail down a more exact number of deaths because, “chronic diseases and associated deaths are multi-factorial. As far as diet goes, is it the lack of fruits and veggies or the excess animal and processed foods that is the culprit? It’s hard to say.” It was also noted that more research is needed to fully understand why Omega- 3 is so effective in establishing a dietary reference intake (DRI). Researchers added that until requirements are established, “Americans are likely to continue to fall short of their Omego-3 intake.” At least, according to this study, sounds like both increasing Omega-3 and decreasing trans fat intake may be a good idea.
So what were some of the other results of the study? Here they are…
1. Smoking Tobacco: 436,000 to 500,000 deaths
2. High blood Pressure: 372,000 to 414,000 deaths
3. Obesity: 188,000 to 237,000 deaths
4. Physical Inactivity: 164,000 to 222,000 deaths
5. High Blood Glucose: 163,000 to 217,000 deaths
6. High LDL Cholesterol: 94,000 to 124,000 deaths
7. High Salt Intake: 97,000 to 107,000 deaths
Other risk factors included: alcohol use, low polyunsaturated fatty acids, and low intake of fruits and vegetables.
So, what are you probably eating that could be contributing to the SECOND cause of preventable death which is high blood pressure? According to that study, high blood pressure kills between 372,000-414,000 every year. And listen to this… On September 23, 2009, according to Reuters, a recently released study found a diet high in a form of sugar found in sweetened soft drinks and junk food raises blood pressure among men. Reuters reports, the study “provided the first evidence that fructose helps raise blood pressure.” The study “suggested that people who consume sweetened soft drinks at night could gain weight faster than those who don’t.” From Reuters: “These results suggest that excessive fructose intake may have a role in the worldwide epidemic of obesity and diabetes,” said Dr. Richard Johnson of the University of Colorado-Denver, who studied the link between blood pressure and men.
Fructose is about 50% of the make-up of table sugar and the high fructose corn syrup popular in many foods. The American Heart Association currently says women should eat no more than 100 calories of added processed sugar per day, or six teaspoons (25 grams), while most men should keep it to just 150 calories or nine teaspoons (37.5 grams). On average, Americans consume 22 teaspoons (90 grams) or 355 calories of added sugar each day. Maybe it’s time Americans started seriously cutting back just a little… don’t you think?

• Q: What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
• A: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) occurs when a nerve that goes into your hand is compressed at the wrist. Think of CTS being a “pinched nerve” in the wrist caused by swelling, a thickening of the tendons responsible for moving your fingers, or from trauma to your wrist. CTS typically begins as tingling in the hand and can progress to muscle weakness, and finally atrophy of the muscles in the effected hand. Commonly, pinching of the nerve may occur at the neck giving you similar symptoms.
• Q: Do I use heat or ice after an injury?
• A: After an injury like a twisted ankle, the inflammatory stage begins and lasts for 24-72 hours. During this time, ice is preferred. Typically, ice is applied for 10 to 20 minutes. This cycle is repeated as often as necessary. If you don’t have an ice pack, a bag of frozen peas or corn will do. P.R.I.C.E., a common acronym used after an injury, suggests patients Protect, Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate their injury.
• Heat is generally applied after the inflammatory phase is over. Moist heat is preferred over dry heat, because dry heat may dehydrate your muscles making them less flexible and predisposing them to further injury. Moist heat applications last 20-30 minutes.

You’re probably one or the other, or, at least, more one than the other. What am I talking about? Introverted and extroverted personality types.
Some people just love social settings. They are usually the “life of the party” and tend to make whatever they are doing a party of its own. While these people love and thrive on the energy of most social settings, others do not.
Introverts hide from groups of people and would much rather spend their time in solitude. The same party that charges up the extrovert completely drains the introvert. One can easily say, especially in today’s society where everyone is so connected… It’s Tough Being Shy.
But, what if being shy was actually bad for your health? And, what if new research actually showed it can even double your risk of death within five years? If that just shocked you a little, you will be very interested in this: According to a study in the journal Brain, Behavior and Immunity, low levels of the extroversion personality trait may signal that blood levels of a key inflammatory molecule (interleukin 6) have crossed over a threshold linked to a doubling of risk of death within five years.
According to a June 17, 2009 press release by the University of Rochester Medical Center, “Long-term exposure to hormones released by the brain of people under stress, for instance, takes a toll on organs. Like any injury, this brings a reaction from the body’s immune system, including the release of immune chemicals that trigger inflammation in an attempt to begin the healing process. The same process goes too far as part of diseases from rheumatoid arthritis to Alzheimer’s disease to atherosclerosis, where inflammation contributes to clogged arteries, heart attacks and strokes.”
Medical science is beginning to study the mindbody connection more and more. In doing so, it is discovering just how profound an effect personality and stress can have on one’s health and wellbeing.
But the big question is: Now that research is showing the health benefits of having an extroverted personality – Could An Introvert Become An Extrovert…And get the same health benefits?
According to the University of Rochester Medical Center press release: “The findings recall an idea described as early as 1911 by French philosopher Henri Bergson that he called élan vitale or ”life force,” according to the authors. This aspect of adult personality may be linked to childhood temperament as well. Some babies are very relaxed, other babies are active. Activity levels may reflect a fundamental, biologically-based energy reserve, although no one has explained the biochemistry behind it.”
It seems that people may simply be born introverts or extroverts. But, your increasing your activity levels may be one thing you can change that can be of great benefit to your health. Even though you cannot change your innate personality – physical exercise may be linked to the activity level in extroverts – which may help lower IL-6 levels. Researchers Create Monkeys With “Glowing” Hands! Will This Cure Inherited Diseases Like Parkinson’s, MS And More?

The question is a difficult one. There are many differing opinions and opposing viewpoints…but who has the right answer? Is there even a right answer?
What is the question? Allow me to explain. Steve Connor, a science editor for The
Independent, recently penned an article about how scientists have developed a technique to genetically modify monkeys so that future monkeys would retain the same genetic modification. The premise being: if they can cure certain genetic diseases in monkeys, then scientists will be able to use the same or similar treatments to cure the same diseases in humans. If this is possible, the scientists mentioned in the article believe they may be able to cure inherited (genetic) diseases such as Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease, cystic fibrosis, MS and more.
In a study published in the journal Nature, a team of scientists led by Erika Sasaki of the Central Institute of Experimental Animals in Kawasaki used Marmoset monkeys to perform their tests, mainly because humans and other primates are genetically similar.
The researchers introduced a jellyfish gene into the monkey’s embryos. Why a jellyfish gene?
The purpose of the experiment was not to “cure” anything. It was simply to see if they could pass on new genes to the monkey’s offspring. In other words, they wanted to see if they could change the genetic code for not only that monkey, but for all of that monkey’s descendents.
The jellyfish gene was used because it makes the Monkey’s Hands Glow Green Under Fluorescent Light! This made it easy for the scientists to know if they succeeded since all they had to do was shine a fluorescent light on the monkey’s hands.
Previously, scientists performed similar work and created a “transgenic” monkey with jellyfish genes in 2001. The monkey’s name was Andi. They encountered a problem: even though Andi’s hands glowed green under fluorescent light, her offspring’s hands did not. This meant that any genetic diseases the scientists were trying to alter with this technique would not be changed for future generations.
But this experiment proved different. Not only did the monkey’s hands glow, so did its offspring’s. The genetic trait scientists had inserted into one monkey was passed on to future generations.
Why is this so important? It’s important to the scientists because they can encode monkeys with human genes that cause diseases (such as Parkinson’s) that can be used for testing in hopes of finding a cure for humans with the same diseases. On one hand, isn’t modern science amazing? Who would have thought 25 years ago that scientists would be creating genetically altered monkeys with the hopes of curing “incurable” diseases?
On The Other Hand, Is The Big Question: What are the repercussions of all of this? Is it ethical or cruel to create colonies of genetically altered monkeys with terrible diseases strictly for testing experimental treatments? What are the long-term effects of permanently altering genes that are passed down from generation to generation to generation? Could the “cure” end up worse than the disease? This type of genetic tampering could easily positively or negatively affect the entire human race.
At this point, these are questions no one has answers to. It is very clear from the comments left on the Internet after Steve Connor wrote the article that there are strong opinions on both sides of this issue. One hopes we as a species choose the right path.

Researchers at UC Irvine have discovered your body’s internal clock (or circadian rhythm) controls energy levels in your cells. This is important news because it can lead to a new understanding of the amount of sleep we get, when we get it, and how routine we are with that pattern and metabolism and many diseases such as cancer, diabetes, obesity and more.
The study appeared online in Science Express on March 12th, 2009 and researchers found the proteins involved with circadian rhythm and metabolism are linked and dependent on each other.
Circadian rhythms are 24-hour sleep/wake patterns. They help us adapt to environmental changes and the time of day. Breaking these patterns can have detrimental effects on health. According to researcher Paolo Sassone-Corsi, “Our circadian rhythms and metabolism are closely partnered to ensure that cells function properly and remain healthy.
This discovery opens a new window for us to understand how these two fundamental processes work together, and it can have a great impact on new treatments for diseases caused by cell energy deficiencies.” Sassone-Corsi went on to say, “When the balance between these two vital processes is upset, normal cellular function can be disrupted and this can lead to illness and disease.” These findings help explain why lack of proper sleep – both the amount and patterns – can lead to a plethora of health problems and increased aging.
The study suggests proper sleep and diet can help normalize the circadian rhythm balance. For many years, countless health experts have advised going to bed at the same time and waking up at the same time every single day. Even during weekends. With this new information – this seems to be great advice.
